Week 1 Blog

  1. Hi everyone! My name is Lourdes and I am a 6th grade ELA teacher in Oklahoma. At the moment I am on maternity leave raising my newborn son who is now 3 weeks old. However, I absolutely love being a teacher and I believe that earning my M.Ed degree can only be beneficial for my current and future professional goals of working in education. I look forward to learning new things that I can apply in my classrooms for my students and even as a new mom going forward.

  1. ISTE standard Digital Citizen C asks that students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property. Regarding Oklahoma 6th grade English standard 6.2.R.3, students can exemplify their comprehension of diverse literary texts by addressing their own thoughts and ideas via a research essay.Furthermore, students will demonstrate a respect for the use and sharing of intellectual property by utilizing citations as needed and substantiating their ideas by referencing the content discussed in their essay assignment. Lastly, I would also implement the need for a bibliography where literary work discussed is included in order to instill the good habit and importance of giving credit where it is due. All students would also be encouraged to utilize online research databases to include in their papers. Since my students more than likely do not have much experience with research papers, I would provide them with a guide that outlines the requirements of this type of assignment. I would also share some digital resources for them to refer back to for assistance, such as by advising them of useful database websites. Students would be required to turn in their essay via an online class workspace such as Canvas where they can upload the assignment as soon as it is ready.

  1. My lesson idea is inspired specifically by Gura’s Reflectively Creative approach for students. This target aims to empower learners with the ability to become aware of and direct the entire creative process. By writing a research essay that addresses a specific prompt regarding a literary work or idea, students are able to execute this creative process entirely. In addition to having control of their own creative process expressed through their writing, learners can also achieve another one of Gura’s creative targets. Creativity as part of a team is addressed as well because the assignment incorporates the use of references and the importance of citing sources. It is through the use of citing sources and building on the ideas of others that students are practicing a digital form of collaboration with others.

  1. Hi Lourdes!
I love that you utilized ISTE standard C to talk about intellectual property. Specifically, I'm interested in how you tied bibliographies to creativity and the creative process. Most people typically see bibliographic work as something scientific and very strict. Yet, I think that you make a good point when you say that students will probably have to collaborate with each other in order to ensure that they're giving proper credit within the context of utilizing research writing to create new ideas. I will also add the Kolb reading into the mix when I say that citations can often be a higher-level learning skill. Each citation is unique, and there is no way to create rote memorization when students have access to so many different ways to gather information. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Congrats on your sweet baby!!
I like how you included a bibliography to create good habits within students. Having them start practicing how to do these things at a younger age sets them up for success.
